Before the start of Champions Trophy, India plays an unofficial ODI match against New Zealand as a practice match. Its the final practice for the Indian team for Champions trophy in which they are regarded as one of the favorites. India had defeated New Zealand heavily in the recent encounter in tri-series. Pakistan eye face-saving win

Pakistan remained on course to win the final Test against Sri Lanka after denting the home team's chase of a record target.

Sri Lanka, set an improbable 492 to sweep the series 3-0 after they had won the first two Tests, were 183-3 in their second knock at stumps on the fourth day at the Sinhalese sports club.

When play begins on the fifth day for the first time in the series -- the first Test ended in four days and the second in three -- Pakistan will need seven wickets and Sri Lanka a further 309 runs in 90 overs.

No team has scored 492 runs in the fourth innings to win a Test match. The highest successful chase so far is 418-7 by the West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2003.

Sri Lanka were given a minimum of 150 overs to get the runs after Pakistan declared their second innings at 425-9 soon after lunch with former captain Shoaib Malik making 134.

Shoaib Malik hit an unbeaten 106 to put Pakistan on course for a face-saving victory in the final Test against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan, who lost the first two Tests to hand Sri Lanka a decisive lead in the series, finally flexed their batting muscle to pile up 300/5 in their second innings by stumps on the third day.

Kamran Akmal returned unbeaten on 60 after adding 114 for the unbroken sixth wicket with Malik as Pakistan established an overall lead of 366 runs with five wickets in hand.

Sri Lanka will need to put on their best batting display in the series to record a 3-0 sweep over the remaining two days after failing to cross 300 in any of the five previous innings.

Pakistan will try to build on the lead against Sri Lanka on day three of the third Test against Sri Lanka.

Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria's five-wicket haul put Pakistan in command on the second day of the final Test against Sri Lanka.

Kaneria added four wickets in the final session to the one he had claimed just before lunch as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 233 in response to Pakistan's first-innings total of 299.

Sri Lanka struggled throughout and Pakistan could have walked off with a much bigger lead had it not been for battling knocks from Mahela Jayawardene (79) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (44) in Colombo.

Pakistan's openers Khurram Manzoor and Fawad Alam (14 not out) had extended the lead to 82 with a stand of 16 for the first wicket when Rangana Herath produced the breakthrough by bowling Maznoor for two.

The wicket was the 14th to fall in the day and Younus Khan played out one delivery as Pakistan closed on 16 for one.

In the morning, the home side's bowlers continued the fine work they had started at the end of the final session on the first day, skittling out Pakistan inside the first 17 minutes of play.

Australia face record chase to win

Australia were left needing to set a new world record if they were to win the second Test against England at Lord's.

England, when rain forced an early close on Saturday, the third day, were 311 for six, a lead of 521, with two days remaining.

Whether they declared on that total overnight, as seemed likely, or batted on, it meant Australia would have to set a new world record for the highest fourth innings total to win a Test, surpassing the 418 for seven made by the West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2002/03.England, bidding for a first Test win over Australia at Lord's in 75 years, were indebted to a stand of 86 in 74 balls between Paul Collingwood (54) and wicket-keeper Matt Prior (60).

Their innings had stalled during the second session but Prior, who faced just 42 balls with nine fours, regained the initiative, and helped justify captain Andrew Strauss' decision not to enforce the follow-on, before he was run out by Marcus North's direct hit.

Collingwood, who'd batted for over six hours to help England secure a draw in last week's series opener in Cardiff, posted his third fifty in four innings in a brisk 72 balls.

Punter welcomes Flintoff distraction

Australia captain Ricky Ponting hopes his side can benefit from this Ashes series turning into an Andrew Flintoff roadshow.

All-rounder Flintoff's revelation that he will retire from Test cricket at the end of this current campaign could disrupt England's focus in the remaining matches of the npower series.

The 31-year-old will have his fitness checked on Wednesday morning ahead of the second Test at Lord's.

And if his knee stands up to its testing, Flintoff will be playing his last Test at English cricket's headquarters, which in itself potentially proves a distraction for Andrew Strauss' team.

"For us, knowing the stature he has in the game in England then I can see it turning into that," said Ponting."Whenever he plays a game you get the feeling of the crowd getting involved and loving seeing him play.

"You can see the fans here are very passionate about watching Andrew Flintoff.

Alam century gives Pakistan hope

Fawad Alam's century on debut helped Pakistan in their recovery on day two of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Pakistan had started the day staring down the barrel, but Umar Gul gave their fightback impetus with a three-wicket haul in the morning session.

Ably assisted by off spinner Saeed Ajmal, Gul helped restrict Sri Lanka's first innings lead to just 150 as they were bowled out for 240.

Alam and opening partner Khurram Manzoor then gave the visitors a sound start to their second innings with an 85-run stand for the first wicket - Pakistan's best opening partnership of the series so far.

Nuwan Kulasekara and Kumar Sangakkara slammed an unbeaten half-century as Sri Lanka seized control on the first day of the second Test.

Kulasekara finished with figures of four wickets for 21 and spinner Ajantha Mendis chipped in with three for 20 as the visitors were dismissed for a paltry 90 runs midway through the afternoon session.

Sangakkara continued the home team's dominance with a fluent innings as Sri Lanka's hopes of securing their first Test series win against Pakistan at home gained momentum.

Pakistan's national selection committee axed flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi and pacer Sohail Tanvir from the 15-man squad.

Afridi and Tanvir were axed from the first Test squad against Sri Lanka, as the selectors preferred to give rookie players Ahmed Shahzad and Mohammad Talha a chance.

Tanvir's omission a surprise

The decision to drop Afridi from the squad was hardly a surprise considering that he has struggled for form in recent months despite being a regular member of the one-day squad.

But the decision to sideline left-arm pacer Tanvir comes as a surprise as after a poor one-day series against Sri Lanka, he bounced back well in domestic cricket.

The first Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka would be played from Saturday at the National Stadium.

Chief selector Abdul Qadir said the decision to drop Afridi did not mean he was completely out of contention for the series.

"He is a very senior player and it was a very difficult decision to drop him. But we didn't want a situation where he was in the 15-member squad and not picked in the final playing eleven. It would have been humiliating for a senior player like him," Qadir said.

He said fast bowler Mohammad Talha and opener Shahzad deserved a chance as both had been doing well in domestic cricket.

Dhoni helps India take 2-1 lead

MS Dhoni played a captain's knock as India battled inclement weather to defeat the West Indies by six wickets via the D/L method.

India also managed to take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match ODI series at the Beausejour Stadium on Friday.

Needing 11 runs off the last over after the target was revised to 159 from 22 overs, Dhoni (46 not out) sent Jerome Taylor's second delivery for a six over mid-wicket as India won with a ball to spare.

The West Indies, put into bat after Dhoni won the toss, rode on Ramnaresh Sarwan's 62 to post a competitive 185 for seven and India were set a revised target of 195 following the Duckworth-Lewis method.

The visitors needed a strong start and Dinesh Karthik (47 off 43 balls) and Gautam Gambhir (44 off 38) did just that.

The duo put on 84 runs before a direct throw from Ravi Rampaul ended Karthik's innings.

Gambhir and Dhoni took the score to 95 for one off 13.3 overs when rain intervened for the fifth time and following a 22-minute delay, the target was revised to 159 in 22 overs.

SX4 Performer: MS Dhoni

Needing another 64 runs from 51 deliveries, India lost Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh (2) in quick succession.

With 11 runs required off the last seven deliveries, Rohit Sharma too departed leaving Dhoni to see the team through. The skipper's 34-ball unbeaten knock included a couple of boundaries besides the six in the last over.

While Dhoni sparkled, opening partnership too did the job.

Karthik and Gambhir not only complemented each other but also gave the visitors perfect launchpad to go for victory after Sarwan's 58-ball 62 guided the West Indies to 185 for seven.

Sarwan was involved in two crucial partnerships, 51 runs with Runako Morton (22) and another 48 with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (15) before he was run out going for a non-existent second.

Gayle hit Ishant Sharma for a couple of boundaries in each of his first two overs.

Nehra takes three wickets

Left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra (3/21) received similar treatment in his second over, another couple of boundaries, before rain intervened with the West Indies at 27 for no loss from 3.3 overs.

Gayle slashed the first ball after resumption and Dhoni did the rest behind stumps. His 14-ball stay at the crease had six hits to the fence.

Following another 15-minute delay, the overs were reduced to 36 per side.

However, rain forced play to be suspended again just two deliveries on re-start with the hosts on 57 for one.

This time play remained suspended for an hour and 20 minutes before it resumed with the overs reduced to 27 a side.

Morton greeted RP Singh with a four but fell soon after.

India began to make amends for their limp World Twenty20 by sealing a 20-run win over West Indies in the first ODI.

India owed the win to a pulsating century from Yuvraj Singh at Sabina Park.

Yuvraj, perhaps still in 20-over mode after his side's Super Eights exit in England earlier this month, smashed 131 off 102 balls before perishing to Dwayne Bravo courtesy of a fine catch by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin as India posted 339 for six.

The hosts made a decent fist of their reply, Shivnarine Chanderpaul top scoring with 63 from 59 balls, but none of their batsmen could stay at the crease long enough to see them home.

Yuvraj Singh blasted 131 runs at more than a run a ball to help India post a daunting target in the first ODI against the West Indies in Kingston.

The middle order southpaw looked a little shaky at the start of the innings but when he got his timing right, there was no stopping the Punjab lad.

He warmed up with a few thunderous sixes off the spinners and depositing them into the adjoining car park and then there was no looking back.

Yuvraj crisply timed the ball past the bowler and through the cover region and effortlessly brought up his 12^th ODI hundred.

India have a great chance to climb up the ladder in the ODI rankings if they put up a good show in the West Indies.

Delhi's winning streak hardly looks to face much challenge from Kolkata when the two square off in an IPL match on Sunday.

Nannes effect

A rookie pacer in Dirk Nannes has done the job for it with the ball and Delhi has been more than happy to give him a spot in the playing XI ahead of McGrath.

Collingwood, meanwhile, never seemed required in a line-up that already boasts of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, David Warner and Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Nothing going the right way

Kolkata, on the other hand, are in desperate search for that one match winner who can turn things around for the beleaguered side, which lies at the bottom of the table. The pressure of captaincy seems to have silenced McCullum's bat significantly and Sourav Ganguly too has not come up with anything extraordinary so far.

The explosive Chris Gayle is gone and the only positive development for the side in a while is the availability of Australian David Hussey, who is expected to be inducted immediately into the struggling line-up.

Poor batting has meant that the bowlers have had very little role to play in deciding the Kolkata's fortune even though the likes of Ishant Sharma have not done too bad.

Delhi in good shape

On current form, Delhi, semifinalists last year, are certain to make the cut even this time around. In contrast, Kolkata are fighting a grim battle to avoid being at the bottom of the heap.

The contrasting form makes Delhi an overwhelming favourites and it would be nothing short of a stunner if Kolkata manage to pull off that elusive win.

- Gautam Gambhir (693) needs 38 runs more to become the leading run-getter in the IPL and to overtake Suresh Raina's tally of 730.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting is sure Mitchell Johnson's bone-breaking will be on Graeme Smith's mind when the South Africa skipper returns for Friday's one-day international.

Left-armer Johnson fractured Smith's left little finger in the Sydney Test match in January and two Tests later in Durban he the double, cracking the opening batsman's right little finger.

Butt revealed Australia would fly directly to Dubai from Johannesburg, where they will play the fifth one-day international against South Africa on April 17.

England will be feeling the pressure at 1-0 down with two to play, but the remaining Tests are at Bridgetown and Port of Spain. Neither of these grounds has produced a draw since April 2001, a run of 12 matches encouraging the tourists to believe that all three series results are still possible.

Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh admitted his side could not afford to repeat the mistakes in the second T20 international.

Yuvraj said playing too many shots early in the innings was the reason behind India's downfall in the first game at Christchurch and his batsmen will try to build partnerships to win the second match tomorrow and square the two-match Twenty20 series.

"We did some mistakes. It is the start of the new tour and we have to understand the conditions and the wickets. So hopefully we will make less errors in the next game," Yuvraj said.

"We actually played too many shots. The moment we got going we got out. We didn't have too many early partnerships. So I guess we need to assess the conditions better in the next game and make a proper plan. The batsmen need to take more responsibility," he said ahead of tomorrow's match.

"The team spirit is high"

Despite the seven-wicket defeat at Christchurch, Yuvraj said the team spirit was high.

"The feeling is good. It is just one game that we lost. It is not a setback. We will come back hard. It is the first game of the series. We have got five one-days, three Test matches and another Twenty20. It is a long tour. So we are all geared up for it," Yuvraj said.

India might think about Irfan

The defeat at Christchurch could have prompted the Indian think-tank to consider an alternative for Irfan Pathan, who had courageously won India a cliffhanger in his brother's company a fortnight ago in Sri Lanka. Irfan had emerged on the international arena as a bowling all-rounder, but of late he has been more productive with the bat than the ball.

In conditions prevalent in New Zealand, a bowler of Praveen Kumar's ability would be more effective than Irfan, who conceded as many as 38 runs from three overs in the first Twenty20.

But Dhoni's penchant for a deep batting line-up may yet see Irfan get the nod against the Uttar Pradesh seamer, who has this uncanny ability to frazzle top order batsmen.

Though Dhoni blamed the batsmen for the debacle, the Indian captain would do well to analyse that India were outplayed by the more athletic Kiwis, who bowled fast and straight, fielded with the alacrity of a leopard and batted with a calmness and purpose that belied their ability to plunder at will.

Only if Virender Sehwag, Yuvarj Singh and Yusuf Pathan produce scores in the excess of 50, can India hope to deprive the Kiwis of a much-sought after series victory tomorrow.

Sehwag and Yusuf cleared the dwarfed boundaries at the AMI stadium at Christchurch consistently while making 26 and 20 respectively, but failed to keep the momentum going.

World champions India would seek to restore their pride after being trounced in the first T20 International by seven wickets.
The Indians play the second and final Twenty20 game against New Zealand on Friday, fully aware that only an inspired show will help them to level the series.

The seven-wicket defeat at Christchurch in the first match must have taken the reputation of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's young bravehearts as kings of Twenty20 a serious beating which they can only rectify by winning tomorrow.

A victory will also boost their morale ahead of the five-match ODI series starting on March 3 and put a balm after their second successive loss against New Zealand in the shortest format of the game.

Kiwis now have distinct advantage

However, the visitors will have to do a lot of catching up as the Kiwis have the distinct advantage of having bowling all-rounders in their ranks, in contrast to India who rely on their batsmen to bowl in the middle overs.

The lack of a genuine all-rounder is beginning to prove quite costly. Only Ravindra Jadeja seems to fall in this category, but the youngster from Rajkot may not find the team management's favour yet.
